The Tung Mine, previously known as the Tortoise Hill workings, is situated 8km north-east of the RHA tungsten mine on the northern schist-gneiss contact of the Tshontanda belt.
The claims were first registered in 1935 by Robert Bayliss, later they were transferred to Rhodesia Metals, then to St. Swithins Ore and Metals (1943 to 1971). In 1971, Tungsten Ventures Ltd. Took over and sank a 30m vertical shaft and did some 150m of underground development. In 1972 the mine closed down.
The workings cover a small north-east trending hill about 500m long. In the quarry, quartz veins up to 0.3m thick occupy concordant shear zones in strongly foliated granitic gneiss. The veins commonly split and rejoin, and pinch and swell to a limited degree. Wolframite and chalcopyrite are erratically distributed and concentrated in quartz stringers localized within a shear zone along the gneiss-schist contact.
