| ⓘ Calcite Formula: CaCO3 Habit: Rhombohedron Colour: Clear, White Fluorescence: Unknown Description: According to Parker (2006), the carbonate dolostones in the Barrett Paving Materials Quarry (Middleboro Stone Quarry) are identified as the Osgood Member of the Salamonie Formation. The Salamonie Formation is Silurian in age, roughly 430 ma.
Calcite is extremely abundant and occurs in vugs throughout the quarry. The calcites at this locality are crude rhombic crystals. Some calcites contain a reddish tint, possibly from iron. References: |
