Stollberg's mining area or Stollberget (originally called Väster Silvberg), located about 15 km outside Smedjebacken, is one of the oldest mining areas in Bergslagen, with ore extraction dating back to the 12th century. The site became historically significant when King Gustav Vasa learned that the mountain—then called Väster Silfberg—contained silver, a resource he urgently needed to finance his political and military ambitions.

Silver production peaked in 1755, reaching 954 kg, after which mining shifted to iron ore. During World War II, Stollberg became one of Sweden’s so‑called “German mines,” supplying ore to the German war industry until exports were banned in 1945 and German‑owned mines were placed under public administration.

Today, mining has ceased, and the Stollberg mining area is a visitor site with free entrance.
