Enstatite Chondrite [EL6; S2]
Fall of 20 March 1868, ~ 1.2 kg
After its fall in 1868, a few pieces of a single stone eventually ended up at the British Museum. By 1918 G. T. Prior had recognized that it belonged to a small group of unusual chondritic meteorites characterized by abundant Enstatite (an iron-poor pyroxene) and some unusual sulfides not found in earth rocks. Today, the first three observed Enstatite-rich chondrite falls (Pillistfer, 1863; Daniel’s Kuil, 1868; Khairpur, 1873) are classified as EL6 Enstatite Chondrites. Formally, Enstatite Chondrites are primarily defined by their bulk chemistry and oxygen-isotope ratios, but their highly reduced mineral assemblages often seem more striking. The low-iron (EL) chemical group is further distinguished by the presence ferroan alabandite.
For Daniel’s Kuil and others of petrologic type EL6, metamorphic processes have homogenized constituent minerals and obliterated many chondrule outlines.
