A giant waterfall on the Zambezi River at the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe and a UNESCO world heritage site. In the local Tonga language, it is called “Mosi-oa-Tunya”, meaning “the smoke that thunders”.
In its central part, the falls are 108m high, the total width of the falls is 1,708m. The average flow rate is 1088 m³/s, the highest recorded flow is 12,800 m³/s.
The Karoo basalt plateau over which the Upper Zambezi flows has many large cracks filled with weaker sandstone. In the area of the current falls the largest cracks run roughly east to west (some run nearly north-east to south-west), with smaller north-south cracks connecting them.
