Septarian concretions in the sedimentary sequence of La Pietra chaotic complex (Monferrato, Tertiary Piedmont Basin) outcropping in the area below the Verrua Savoia Fortress (see coordinates).
A jacket, reaching 20-30 mm in thickness and consisting of gypsum crystals cemented by yellow-brown Fe (oxyhydr)oxides and black Mn oxides, frequently coat the septarian concretions from this deposit. Calcite and frequently gypsum (crystals up to 9 cm) fill the internal cracks of these concretions. Loose gypsum crystals are also found in the incoherent ground, which overlaps the concretions.
All gypsum crystals from this occurrence show a pale yellow fluorescence under SW UV light.
