The Armadale Shire (City of Armadale) is found on the south-eastern margins of Perth, and is 28 kilometres from the Perth CBD. Population 62 296 (2011 census). It covers 560 square kilometres. Much of the shire covers state forest on the Darling Plateau (locally called the Darling Range), and a small section of the Perth Coastal Plain, which is largely residential in this shire.

Separating the plain and plateau is the Darling Scarp, a fault which stretches from the south coast of Western Australia northwards. This has been active in the past resulting in a scarp forming which averages 300 metres above sea level. It has a laterite cap of bauxite, with Archaean granite gneiss rocks under this. The writer noted this as a child as his father was involved in the construction of a water pipeline from Canning Dam at Roleystone in the shire. He brought rock home to build a garden wall, being bluish granite and quartz veins. Relatively small areas along the edge of the scarp in the shire is gneiss plus migmatite, and metasediment and gneiss.

Several small mines for brick clay in the Armadale Shale unit can be found along the scarp edge south of the Armadale town centre. These are both historic dating from the early 1900's and modern, with one active, and a couple further south in neighbouring shires. At the junction of Albany Highway and the South Western Highway was once a cutting into the hill and large mined area. Said to be a gold mine, it is unlikely, as no other gold has been found in the area, and was more likely again a brick clay mine. In the 1980's it was converted into a historic theme park. When this closed a school took over the site. Shallow road gravel quarries can be found on the plateau. No specimens have been seen from the shire.
