The Shire of Donnybrook-Balingup is 200 kilometres south of Perth, and covers 1560 square kilometres. It has a population of 5100 people (2012).

The shire is situated in the lush south-western corner of Western Australia. It is hilly, partly covered by forest and partly agricultural. The local economy is based on fruit growing (especially apples), vegetable growing, viticulture, sheep, cattle, sandstone quarrying, local crafts, and tourism.

Attractions include scenic drives, especially through the valleys created by the Blackwood River near Balingup, food outlets, craft and art galleries, forest hiking and themed event days. The Donnybrook area was first settled by Europeans in 1842 and the town gazetted in 1894. Donnybrook has Australia's largest childrens playground. Balingup is a small hamlet set in a picturesque valley, and named after local Noongar warrior Balingan. The Old Cheese Factory displays work by local artists. The area also has communes, and has been settled by people looking for alterative lifestyles.

Some specimens from the Ferndale pegmatite near Balingup are in local private collections, but there are no other locations of note.
