Mount Brockman hosts numerous Banded Iron formations (BIF).

Ferruginous black shales (Mt McRae shale or Mt McRae Formation, within the Brockman Iron Formation of the Hamersley Group) host an unnamed and uncommonly reported iron oxy-hydroxide (ɛ-FeOOH) (Oswald, 1985).
