The mine was originally an open pit then from 1927 to 1962 was worked underground.
An underground chromium mine originally closed in 1962. Reopened in 1982. Owned by Inco (55%). Produced about 2,000,000 tons of chromite ore to the 1962 closure. Reserves estimated at about 320 kilotons at 33% Cr2O3. The Tiébaghi chromite mine worked one of the world’s largest and richest Cr ore deposits. It was discontinuously operated from 1887 to 1990 and produced 3.27 Mt chromite ore with a maximum grade of 56 wt% Cr2O3, which represent ̴ 87% of New Caledonia's total Cr production.
