The Shire of Gingin is found just beyond the northern fringes of the Perth metropolitan area, covers 3 211 square kilometres, and has a population of
4 685. Apart from the town of Gingin itself which is inland, there are the small coastal settlements of Lancelin, Ledge point and Guilderton.

The economy is based on cereal growing/sheep, fruit growing, olives, viticulture, fishing and tourism. Attractions include fishing, windsurfing, four wheel driving across the Lancelin sand-dunes, and inland for food outlets and craft galleries.

The shire stretches from the coast with the Perth Coastal Plain to the Darling Scarp which marks the western edge of the Yilgarn Craton. Near the coast is limestone, then a band of green-sand with fossils, and finally the granite of the scarp capped by bauxite,. There are no mineral specimen locations known in the shire.
