In 1852, the North American Mining Company began transitioning their work from the "Old" North American Mine to the Cliff Vein where it crossed their property, and thus the South Cliff Mine was born. By 1855, all work had shifted to the South Cliff and the Sump Shaft, the deepest of the five shafts the company was working. Prosperity did not last long as the fissure vein became poor in copper with depth and the mine was purchased by the Cliff Mining Company in 1860, but was never worked by the company, instead being leased on tribute. The mine was worked sporadically until 1892 when the Tamarack Mining Company bought the property, which was later absorbed by the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company in Calumet.
Some good micro coppers have been collected, as can some odd minerals for the Keweenaw such as sphalerite, pyrite, and galena.
Note: The coordinates listed are for the piles along the snowmobile trail near Shaft No. 2, the most easily accessed piles.
