Major laterite-type nickel silicate deposit, derived from weathering of an ultramafic body (harzburgite). Discovered by BGR geologists in the early 1980s.
The laterites are associated with outcrops of precursor dunite, harzburgite and serpentinite.
Residual, lateritic type 40 Mt @ 2% Ni
NOTE: This locality has been attributed to Thabeikkyin Township, Pyin-Oo-Lwin Distr., Mandalay Div. in most publications, probably erroneously deducted from the fact that Tagaung Town is situated in Thabeikkyin Township. The mine, however, is located on Tagaung Taung, a mountain range some 20 km Northeast of Tagaung Town.
