These mountains are constituted of metamorphic rocks, part of them are of Paleozoic age, the rest are Mesozoic rocks. During the Tertiary tectono-metamorphic event, Monti Pisani metamorphic complex suffered deformation and metamorphism to the greenschist facies with the formation of some important quartz extension veins system. The most important systems are hosted in competent Triassic lithotypes ("Anageniti minute", "Quarziti verdi" and "Quarziti bianco-rosa" formations)and they are distributed coherently along the hinge of the main anticlinal folds F1. Other veins are shear veins associated with shear zones (sin-D2, sinD1)and polydeformed veins hosted into the Paleozoic basement. The most important quartz veins systems are:
1) Mt. Cascetto-Costa Moriglione System;
2) Mt. Verruca System;
3) Vorno valley System;
4) San Giuliano Terme System.
