SARIG Record Sheet States;
"The CALLAWONGA CREEK DIGGINGS were discovered in 1864, with very fine gold panned from recent alluvials in a swamp. They were worked intermittently from 1890-1907, and again in 1932 for very poor returns. There was minor prospecting of quartz-iron oxide-pyrite lodes via shafts and shallow pits. Host rock was arkose of the Inman Hill Formation. In the late 1980's further exploration for gold and tungsten was carried out in the area. Only low grade gold mineralisation was indicated, principally at the site of the old gold workings, where mineralisation appeared to have been restricted to a limited system of irregular, narrow (<75 cm wide) quartz veins. The average Au grade was estimated to have been around 2-3 g/t, which was regarded as not deserving of further work. No evidence was found of any continuation or repetition of either gold or tungsten mineralisation beyond the extent of the pre-existing workings.
