St. Mary's County is on Maryland's Coastal Plain Province, underlain primarily by undeformed, loosely consolidated Tertiary and Quaternary sediments. Bedrock is rarely exposed, but when it is, it can yield interesting fossils and materials such as gypsum, diatomite and glauconite. The best places to find outcrop is in fresh excavation or in bluffs along the larger rivers.
