Located near the small township of Lochiel, 129 km N of Adelaide and approx. 18 km S of Snowtown.

Salt has been produced at Lochiel since 1881 from the adjacent 1500 ha inland salt lake. Production in 1883 was stated as being 6-8 tons per day.

Annual winter rains dissolve the accumulated salts in the lake from which the resulting brine was pumped into three 25 ha crystallisers.

The lake is the largest of a system of Quaternary Holocene saline lakes draining an area to the east of the Hummocks and Barunga Ranges extending ~30 km north of Lochiel.

Cheetham Salt Ltd. produced 4,000 t in 1999. The "Salt Works" closed in 2000 but some salt is still harvested here.

Epsomite
Formula: MgSO4 · 7H2O
Description: Epsomite was found growing in saline solutions inside and at the base of salt-crust pressure ridges (which grew up to 30-40cm high) at the northern end of the lake. The largest individual prisms were about 4cm long and 1cm wide, a few also being double terminated, but most were clustered in flat platy aggregates from growing on the bottom of the saline pools. Crystals were transparent to translucent and colourless to a very pale grey. The tabular white crystals found here and commonly traded as epsomite, are mostly glauberite, variably altered to gypsum ( R Bottrill, XRD).
