Liter's Atkins Quarry
Currently operated by Heidelberg Materials, this limestone quarry is more noted for fossils than minerals. This locality produces occasional nice specimens of calcite (in rhombic crystals) and pyrite. Dolomite and sphalerite are less common (the latter in joint fractures).
Pyrite crystals frequently coat Silurian and Devonian fossils. Pyrite clusters are abundant in the Waldron Shale as cubes and octahedra, sometimes iridescent. Calcite occurs inside large brachiopods.
Collecting access is generally restricted, although it may be possible with some geology clubs and university geology departments.
