Zeolites were first found in the boulders below Steep Creek Falls along Rock Creek, northwest of Stevenson, Skamania County, Washington by John Cowles in the early 1960s. The colorless stiff needles were then thought to be natrolite but later found to be excellent examples of mordenite. Specimens are found in three places. One is in the boulders at the base of the falls that have fallen from the cliff which makes up the falls. The second site is a half mile up stream from the bridge and falls in a road cut. The third is in the cliff and boulders from the cliff along the steam down stream from the bridge and falls. Collecting is excellent in the summer when water is low and you want to collect and enjoy the water at the same time.
