Rainy Lake is a freshwater lake that straddles the border between the United States and Canada.

One small producing gold mine (Little American Mine) and numerous small prospects were excavated from 1895-1897 in islands and along the mainland of the south shore of Rainy Lake. The gold was in quartz veins associated with sheared metavolcanic rock (now chloritic and biotitic schists) of the Vermillion Greenstone Belt. See Grout's 1937 article listed below for more details.
