Name(s) in local language(s):
Górnośląskie Zagłębie Węglowe, Śląskie, Polska
Bituminous coal mining district.
One part of this larger district is in Poland (Rybnik Coal Area), the other in the Czech Republic (Ostrava-Karviná Coal Area).
65 underground mines were active in the last decades of the 20th century.
Coal in the eastern part is somewhat enriched in U (up to 0.26%); this concerns the upper beds of the Productive Carboniferous (Orzesze beds, Łaziska beds, Libiąż beds), in the Sobieski (formerly Bierut) and Siersza mines.
Mine waters mainly in the southern and central part may be enriched in natural radium isotopes; the amount of 226Ra and 228Ra in these waters reaches 390 and 200 kBq/m3, respectively. The highest amounts are observed in waters that are also barium-bearing.
