The references do not locate exactly the site, other than the Collins River, Whangamoa Valley. The Collins River is a tributary of the Whangamoa River, and the area is traversed by State Highway 6. It is possibly in the same general area as the Collins Valley Serpentine Mine listed on Mindat. The study was of grains and grain aggregates in polished sections.
Nickel in the area was discovered by Richmond prospector D. Bullen.
Nickel sulphides are found in serpentinite of the Patuki Melange. Pentlandite is partly altered to bravoite, associated with chromite, ilmenite, nickeliferous pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite.
Pentlandite is found as subhedra 0.05-0.15 mm, forming clusters in intergranular spaces, coarse grained chromite, skeletal ilmenite, pyrrhotite 0.1-1.0 mm, and chalcopyrite to 0.05 mm in diameter. Small native copper sphericals were identified in ground concentrates.
Alternatively, details of a talk at a Nelson micromounting seminar (author and date unknown) states the Whangamoa Argillite Quarry has small cavities containing diopside, clinochlore and vesuvianite, pyrolusite dendrites on rodingite, and massive serpentinite. This may also be referring to the Collins Valley Serpentine Mine, but is unconfirmed.
