Köppen climate type:
Molybdenum, copper, bismuth.
Eliot Creek is on the western side of the Aorere Valley, 20 kilometres south-west of Collingwood.
Three high level granodiorite stocks intruding sandstone of the Webb Formation (Rand, 2007), or phyllites and quartzites of the Aorangi Mine Formation (Rabone, 1977), with molybdenum and copper mineralisation in quartz veins and stock works, hosted by albite-muscovite granite. Base metal mineralisation, is in quartz veins peripheral to the higher grade molybdenum and copper mineralisation.
There is an early stage molybdenite-pyrite-pyrrhotite and lesser chalcopyrite-cubanite; and later stage sphalerite-galena-pyrite-pyrrhotite-native bismuth, schapbachite, joseite type sulphosalts.
The deposit was discovered by H.E. Hawkes in 1966. It has since been explored by Kennecott, Asarco, and Lime and Marble Ltd, with costeans, and a few shallow drill holes, finding an overall Mo grade of less than 0.03% Mo.
Note: Schapbachite needs confirmation as pre 2004 source (Rabone, 1977). See Mindat information on the species. Joseite noted by Rabone is an ill-defined species.
