This locality formerly belonged to Dazhou Prefecture, Sichuan Province.
The Gaoyan Mn deposit, hosted in the black shales of the Ediacaran Doushantuo Formation in the Chengkou basin, represents one of the most economically significant Mn resources in China, with estimated reserves exceeding 20 million tons and ore grades between 15% and 35%.
