Opened in the 1870s by S. Thomas & J. Riches & Co. Ltd, ownership was transfered to the Cambrian Collieries Ltd in 1885.

By 1918 the workforce was 4,033. Subsequently the pit was taken over by the Powell Duffryn Company.

Work ceased at the Cambrian No. 3 in 1936 and the remaining pits closed in the 1960s. Some overgrown tips remain on the hillside above the site of the coliery.
