Formula: Na(AlSi3O8)
Description: "Andersine is the most abundant mineral in the cavities, generally forming simple, thin, tabular crystals up to 2 x 1 0.3 cm. They are greyish in hand specimen, but are nearly transparent when viewed under the microscope. The crystals are flattened parallel to (010) and may be slightly elongated parallel to the c axis. Occasional hollowed terminations are observed. Optically, the crystals are twinned on the Carlsbad and Albite laws and show only slight concentric zonation. The Portland occurrence is of some significance as free-standing crystals are rare."

Description: "One feldspar crystal selected for microprobe analysis from the interlocking mass consisted mainly of anorthoclase, with a rim of andesine. However none of the other crystals examined microscopically show this relationship and it is not possible to establish how widespread anorthoclase really is."

Description: "Water-clear crystals of chabazite, up to 3 or 4 mm across occur sporadically in some cavities in the basalt, seated directly on the clay film, or where this is absent, on the andersine-augite-ilmenite crystals. The chabazite crystals are generally lenticular with a hexagonal outline, a form commonly given the variety term phacolite."

Multiple twinning is frequently observed, with many faces striated. Chabazite is often associated with phillipsite."

Description: "Thomsonite is the rarest of the zeolites at the Cape Grant quarry, forming globules up to 1.5 mm across. On some specimens, white hemispherical aggregates of thomsonite overgrow the more compact botryoidal coatings. Thomsonite may occur with analcime."
