Shropshire is a ceremonial county in western England, bordering Wales to the west and the English counties of Cheshire to the north, Staffordshire to the east, Herefordshire to the south, and Worcestershire to the south-east. It covers approximately 3,490 km², making it one of the largest inland counties in England. The county town is Shrewsbury, while other important towns include Telford, Oswestry, Bridgnorth, and Ludlow.
Geographically, Shropshire is one of the most topographically and geologically varied counties in England. The western part of the county includes upland terrain associated with the Welsh Borderlands, while the Shropshire Hills—an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty—form a prominent upland block in the south, including peaks such as The Long Mynd, Stiperstones, and Clee Hill. Central and northern Shropshire are characterised by rolling lowlands and river valleys, notably that of the River Severn, which flows south-eastward through the county. The climate is temperate maritime, with higher rainfall in upland areas.
Geologically, Shropshire is of exceptional international importance. The county exposes a remarkably complete sequence of Precambrian to Mesozoic rocks, making it a classic area for the study of early Earth history. The Longmyndian Supergroup consists of late Precambrian sandstones and volcaniclastic rocks, while nearby Ercall, Wrekin, and Pontesford–Linley complexes expose some of England’s oldest igneous and metamorphic rocks. Shropshire is also famous for its Ordovician and Silurian strata, particularly around Church Stretton and Wenlock Edge, where fossil-rich limestones and shales were instrumental in defining the Silurian Period. Younger Carboniferous, Permian, and Triassic sedimentary rocks occur in the north and east, overlain locally by Quaternary glacial deposits.
Shropshire has a notable mineral and mining heritage, though generally on a smaller scale than some neighbouring counties. The county was historically important for lead, copper, and zinc mining, particularly in the Stiperstones–Snailbeach district, where galena-bearing veins were worked extensively in the 18th and 19th centuries. Baryte, fluorite, and calcite occur as associated minerals. Ironstone was mined locally, and limestone has long been quarried for building stone and agricultural use. Coal mining occurred in the Coalbrookdale Coalfield, which played a pivotal role in the early Industrial Revolution.
