A coal mine started in 1938 and closed on 18 December 1992.
Almost all buildings are removed but a large dump (height 100 m) is still there.

GPS coordinates are for the dump, not the mine itself, which is further south (where the "Aldenhoven Testing Center" is now).

Located 1 km west of Freialdenhoven, about 2 km north of Siersdorf and about 18 km NE of Aachen.

The dump of the Emil-Mayrisch mine is located quite far from the mine between the places Setterich, Puffendorf, Siersdorf and Freialdenhoven. The heap is only separated from Freialdenhoven by the B 57.

From the start of mining in 1952 until the Emil-Mayrisch colliery was closed in 1992, the remains of the mine were dumped on the heap on an area of ​​56 hectares (0.56 square kilometres). A more than 1,000 m long conveyor belt was used to transport the tailings from the pit to the dump. During this time, the dump grew to a height of up to approx. 70 m in relation to the surrounding area.

Even after Emil-Mayrisch's active period ended, parts of the heap were processed in order to get to the remaining coal.

Today the dump is used by hang-gliders, the ponds on the Freialdenhovener side of the dump are available to anglers.
