The Garden City Mine is located approximately one mile east of Eagle River. The Garden City Mining Company formed on October 24, 1855. Two shafts were sunk on the Ashbed Lode in 1856. Between 1859 and 1864, a total of 54,000 pounds was produced. During this time on the site, a large stamp mill, rockhouse, shops, and a number of dwellings were built. By 1866, all work ceased; a product of falling copper prices after the American Civil War. In 1879, the property was sold and another company, the Caton Mining Company, started exploration work. No additional information is available concerning this mining venture. Today, the area is very overgrown with vegetation, making collecting on the original piles tricky. With patience, one can still find the occasional specimen of copper and prehnite.
