One of a group of mines (Ludcott/Wrey/North Trelawney) working two north-south lodes about 120 yards apart. Eventually amalgamated as Wrey and Ludcott United about 1863 and ceased working in 1866.

Wheal Wrey was at the northern part of the set and worked the eastern lode.

Dines: The Metalliferous Mining Region of South-West England, Volume II, 619-620:

"Wheal Wrey was opened in 1846 by a Capt Peter Clymo, the mine soon cut rich. By 1855 the mine was being drained by a small 22" beam engine, which was later converted to a 60" cylinder. The mine continued to be worked by a shaft 108 fathoms deep, at which level the lode values droped off. And a decision was made to close the mine. This caused a big problem for the owners of Wheal Ludcott, as a number of levels connected between the two mines. After negotiations Wheal Wrey was bought for 3438 UK pounds in 1862."
