Development Status: Producer
Host Rock: Hornblendite, Gneiss, Schist

A former Al-Cr-Fe-Mg (magnesite)-silica occurrence/mine located 3 miles N of Burnsville on Mine Fork of Jacks Creek, on National Forest land (fee ownership; private lease; mineral rights only). Discovered in 1870. Owned by Mr Garrett Ray, North Carolina (1975). Operated by The International Minerals and Chemical Corporation (Inc.), P.O. Box 71, Carlsbad, New Mexico 88220. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters. Production years were pre-1941 to 1973. Mined for chromite in 1917-1918. Latter production (circa 1973) was a quarry operation for olivine.

Mineralization is hosted in Neoproterozoic gneiss. The ore body is 61 meters thick with a depth-to-top of 2 meters, at a width of 305 meters, length of 805 meters and an area of 61 HA. The shape of ore body No. 1 is massive and No. 2 is irregular. The chromite occurs in vein-like segregations in olivine. The primary mode of origin was magmatic differentiation. Primary ore control was igneous activity and the secondary control was lithology. Wallrock alteration is slight (unspecified). The peridotite consists of partly altered and relatively unaltered dunite and saxonite. Unaltered material occurs in a lens-shaped zone near the center. The dunite is composed of fine-grained olivine and small crystlas of chromite. The degree of serpentinization is small. The saxonite is composed of fine-grained olivine, bronzite crystals and chromite. Some of the bronzite has been altered to talc. Chloritization is evident near larger joints and faults. Chromite occurs in dunite at the extreme SW and NE ends. Most recently a quarry was developed in the west-central part of the peridotite to exploit olivine. Local alteration includes serpentinization. Local rocks include meta-ultramafic rock and/or migmatitic biotite-hornblende gneisses.

Workings include surface openings. The southern end was prospected by pits. The northern end was prospected by a 100 foot shaft. A quarry was developed in the west-central part of the deposit.

Production data are found in: Hunter, C.E. (1941).

This property has been a minor producer.

The chromite analysis gave 44.20% Cr2O3, 20.05% Fe203, 0.30% Si02, 21.30% Al203, 14.48% MgO; Cr:Fe is 2.1:1. Fe content is 14.04%, calculated from Fe2O3.

No reserve estimate could be made due to the irregular occurrence extent of the chromite veins.
