The sadanagaite root name minerals are defined as minerals in the calcium amphibole subgroup with 0.5 < A(Na+K+ 2Ca) where Na or K is dominant, and with 1.5 < C(Al+Fe3++2Ti), where Al or Fe3+ are dominant. The W position may contain (OH), F or Cl.
The individual minerals are defined by their dominant element in the A, C2+, C3+and W position.

Named for Ryoichi Sadanaga (b. 1920), Professor Emeritus of the University of Tokyo.
The first sadanagaite mineral was published (IMA1980-027) by Shimazaki et al. (1984). Since then, the group has been redefined twice, both on the 1997 and 2012 amphibole report. It is therefore necessary to verify all references for sadanagaite-group minerals by checking the chemical composition for correct naming of the referenced mineral.
