About Pargasite Root Name Group
Formula:
ACa2(C2+4C3+)(Al2Si6O22)W2
The pargasite minerals are defined with 0.5 < A(Na+K+2Ca)<1.5 where Na or K is dominant and with the C position occupied by Mg or Fe2+ as dominant divalent ions and 0.5 < C(Al+Fe3++Cr3++V3++2Ti) < 1.5 where Al is dominant, except for chromio-pargasite, which has Cr3+ as the dominant trivalent ion in the C position and vanadio-pargasite, which has V3+ as the dominant trivalent ion in the C position. Note that if Fe3+ is instead the dominant C trivalent cation, the root name is not "ferri-pargasite", but instead becomes hastingsite.
The W position may contain (OH), F or Cl.
The individual pargasite minerals are defined by their dominant element in the A, C2+, C3+ and W position.
The W position may contain (OH), F or Cl.
The individual pargasite minerals are defined by their dominant element in the A, C2+, C3+ and W position.

O in the OH site = 2*Ti apfu. Fe3+, Mn2+ and Mn3+ (and their oxides) calculated from charge balance, assuming all Fe assigned to Fe3+ before any Mn2+ is converted to Mn3+. Grains shows weak core/rim and patchy zoning, notably in Pb. This analysis is a grain core. Highest Pb content observed is 3.27 wt% PbO (= 0.13 Pb apfu). | |
