Named by Haidinger because "It unites, what is rarely the case with mineral names, the comparatively trite and prosaical allusion to the native country, with the poetical recollection of the characteristic verdure of the Emerald Isle." (Specimens originated in Cornwall)

Note: a green synthetic glass is also marketed under the name "erinite".
