About Laueite Supergroup

M1 = Fe2+, Mg2+, Mn2+;
M3+ = Al3+ or Fe3+;
and XO4 = PO4 or AsO4.

Name:
Named after the first mineral in the supergroup that had its structure determined, laueite (Moore, 1965).
The species laueite itself was named by Hugo Strunz in 1954 in honour of Max Felix Theodor von Laue (1879-1960), professor of physics at the Kaiser-Wilhelm Institute (now Max Planck Institute), Berlin, Germany and in the University of Göttingen, Göttingen, Germany. Laue was the first to verify that minerals had a regular atomic arrangement, as had been predicted by previous physicists. He directed the original experiments using x-rays to obtain a diffraction pattern that became the method for determining crystal structures.

The supergroup is divided into the Laueite Group (phosphates) and the Maghrebite Group (arsenates). All members are triclinic.

Classification of Laueite Supergroup
The laueite structure type featuring three metal sites (M1, M2, M3) and one tetrahedral site that form an open-channel framework networked by hydrogen bonds to channel water molecules. M1 is a 2+ cation and M2 and M3 are 3+ cations. In the laueite subgroup, the X site is phosphorous, whereas in the maghrebite subgroup, X is arsenic.
