Named by S.K. Filatov, G.A. Karpov, A.P. Shanlinskii, S.V. Krivovichev, L.P. Vergasova, and A.V. Antonov in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (IVS), Far East Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences.
Known synthetic analogue.

Chemically related to kristjánite.

In the structure Na occurs within NaO6 and NaO7 polyhedra.

Unstable in natural conditions and is covered by a white crust, after long exposure to air.
