Named in honour of Professor Yevgeniy Konstantinovich Markhinin (Евгений Константинович Мархинин) (26 September 1926, Rostov-on-Don, USSR - 6 February 2016), Institute of Volcanology, Russian Academy of Sciences, Kamchatka peninsula, Russia, in recognition of his contributions to volcanology.
Related to but not isostructural with yavapaiite and eldfellite.
