Originally reported from Kobokobo pegmatite, Lusungu River District, South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaïre)in L. Van Wambeke: "Contribution a l'etude de la mineralisation radioactive de la pegmatite de Kobokobo et description d'une nouvelle espece minerale radioactive de la serie phosphuranylite-renardite: la kivuite." Bull. soc. belge geol., paleontol., et hydrol, 67, 383-403 (1958) (publ. 1959).
Michael Fleischer commented in the American Mineralogist, v. 44 (1959, September-October), p. 1326-1327: "Discussion. The analysis is unsatisfactory, because one cannot tell how the impurities were deducted. Needs confirmation and tests for homogeneity, in view of the behavior with nitric acid."
L. Van Wambeke (1971) later informally discredited kivuite in "The Problem of Cation Deficiencies in Some Phosphates Due to Alteration Processes", American Mineralogist, vol. 56, p. 1380: "Eylettersite is not only the first radioactive mineral in the crandallite series, but also the first hydrated Th phosphate found in nature, the mineral kivuite being often a mixture of thorian crandallite or eylettersite with phosphuranylite."
