A former underground and open cut copper, lead and zinc mine.
The Baal Gammon Copper Mining Company was formed in December 1906. The company immediately set about sinking a shaft at the site, and reports of developments continued until November 1907. The shaft reached a depth of 212 feet. At times it is stated that the reef dipped east, at other times north. It appears to be an ironstone lode rather than a quartz reef.
At the surface the lode was exposed as ironstone, gossan and quartz. At 15 feet from the surface copper carbonates (malachite, azurite?) and peacock ore (bornite, turgite?). Mineralised blue slate 165 feet. Gossan with green carbonate crystals (malachite?) and steel grey ore (tenorite, pyrite, sphalerite etc?). Near the bottom of the shaft masses of probably malachite veinlets were found. At 212 feet the reef had narrowed to 18 inches of dense ironstone with blue slate on the footwall, and copper carbonate stains on both walls.
Samples sent of picked stone gave trace gold, and average silver and copper.
