A former lode Au mine located in sec. 11, T1S, R14E, MDM, 4.1 km (2.5 miles WSW of Hog Mountain (coordinats of record) (on Wood Creek, 2 miles NW of Jacksonville). Operated by the Belmont-Shawmut Mining Co. (1923-1928). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 10 meters. Not much work done before 1896 when the Eagle and Shawmut claims were joined together. References include report on each mine separately.
Mineralization is hosted in slate, amphibolite and schist. The slate is interbedded with thin-layered sandstone averaging 2 inches. Lenses of limestone 2 to 3 feet thick occur above volcanic rocks and thinner lenses of conglomerate occur in slate below the volcanics. A narrow belt of pyroxenite or hornblendite, or an allied hornblende-pyroxene peridotite exists between green-chlorite schist and black slate. For a more complete geologic description see Knopf (1929). Local alteration involves a pyroxenite intrusive which has been sheared and altered to multiform chlorite schist and subsequently ankerized and silicified. Chlorite schist sometimes resembles serpentine schist due to the lusterous green; in places this rock has a pseudomorphic texture much like serpentinized peridotite but the phenocrysts instead of being bastite are chlorite embedded in a fine-grained chlorite matrix. Local rocks include Jurassic marine rocks, unit 1 (Western Sierra Nevada and Western Klamath Mountains) and/or Undivided pre-Cenozoic metavolcanic rocks, unit 2 (undivided).
Workings include underground openings with an overall depth of 914.4 meters. A crosscut adit 1,100 feet long through the footwall to the lode connects with an inclined shaft 2,163 feet, with 19 levels at various intervals.
Sulfides comprise as much as 15% of total ore.
