A former placer Au-PGE (Rh-Ir-Os-Ru-Pd)-Fe-Ni-Cu mine (hydraulic) located in secs. 22-26, T6N, R5E, HM, 1.9 km (6,200 feet) SW of Salyer, along the South Fork Trinity River at Sandy Bar (1 mile upstream from the Hammer property). Owned-Operated by J. A. Koon (1917). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 10,000 meters (sic). Property is about 2 miles above mouth of South Fork of Trinity River. The river is the border between two counties, and this is in the river and bank.
Mineralization is a stream placer (Deposit model: 119: Placer Au-PGE), hosted in Holocene gravel. The ore body is stream sediment deposits at 7.62 meters thick. Controls for ore emplacement were stream hydraulics. The bedrock is slate. Local rocks include Jurassic marine rocks, unit 1 (Western Sierra Nevada and Western Klamath Mountains).
Workings included hydraulic surface operations over an area of 24.282 hectares.
Related tectonic structures include the Klamath Mountains Accreted Terrane.
production information: Platinum grade does not seem reasonable (J. Peterson, 02/92).
Au and PGE are fine and flaky. Snetsinger gives locality of Pt nugget as stream gravels from the South Fork of the Trinity River. Iridosmine identified by electron microprobe.
