A former lode Cu-Au-Hg mine located in sec. 16, T37N, R7W, MDM, 4.3 km (2.7 miles) WSW of Bonanza King lookout and 2.6 km (8,500 feet) E of Carrville, at the head of Copper Creek, on Federal Park Service land (Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area). Owned by J. M. and I. M. Foster (1965). Operated by the Hoover Drilling Co. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters.
Mineralization is a Cu-Hg deposit (Deposit model: 179: Silica-carbonate Hg) hosted in diorite, serpentinite, andesite, meta-basalt, and greenstone. The ore body involves fracture coatings, disseminations and a vein. Deposit sounds like a massive sulfide deposit overprinted with a silica-carbonate Hg deposit. Alteration is local (dike is chloritized). Associated rocks include lamprophyre. Local rocks include ultramafic rocks, chiefly Mesozoic, unit 1 (Trinity Ophiolite).
Related tectonic structures include the Klamath Mountains.
Workings include underground and surface openings. Prior to 1905 there was 1 adit about 225 feet long and a shallow shaft with drifts E and W near the contact between diorite and serpentine. There is also an open cut.
Production data are found in O'Brien, J.C. (1965): 21.
The Hoover Drilling Co., in 1956, shipped 2 carloads of surface material. They drilled a 78 foot deep hole and did not find ore.
The occurrence of cinnabar was noted on the floor of the open cut at its W end.
