This mine is developed in a unit of highly impure low-grade marble, not sedimentary limestone. It is actually an open pit mine, not a quarry, having been operated to provide flux for the Franconia Iron Works. While it is usually referred to as the Sugar Hill Limestone quarry, that is not its real name - which has been lost with the passage of time.
