A former lode Au occurrence/mine located in the SW¼NW¼ sec. 35, T19N, R10E, MDM, 1.1 km (0.7 mile) ENE of Alleghany, along the W canyon wall of Kanaka Creek (on the divide between Kanaka Creek and the North Fork Kanaka Creek), on private (patented) land within a National Forest area. The property is comprised of 4 patented claims. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters. In earlier years this property was called the Monroe Consolidated group.
NOTE: USGS MRDS database file #10086538 provides erroneous geographic coordinates placing this locality in sec. 35; however, it is the wrong T&R (T19N, R9E). Both MRDS files agree that the correct T&R location is sec. 35, T19N, R10E.
Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in schist, serpentinite and gabbro. The ore body strikes NNE and dips W at a thickness of 1.83 meters. The main vein is the Rising Sun vein that strikes N8E and dips 60-85W, averaging 75W. It is irregular with splits and stringers, mostly not more than 2½ feet thick. Minor reverse faults are approximately parallel to the vein. Country rock includes the usual amphibolite schist, but also a band of dark quartz-chlorite schist and hornblende-mica schist. The more massive phases found to the S are lacking here. The schist contains small quartz stringers parallel to the schistosity.
There are 2 ore shoots: 1 where the vein splits in 25 foot horse & reunites again; and, the second is in the S part of the caved adit. In the first there are sharp minor strike and dip changes & numerous quartz stringers & minor gouge in the walls. The Cedar vein strikes NNW, dips W, and is the western extension of the Eastern Star vein & is faulted by a W-dipping vein parallel to the Rising Sun, 900 feet E, which may be the same as the small displacement at the face of the adit. Serpentine & gabbro dikes nearby do not outcrop in the vicinity of the veins. Mill-grade ore with small, fairly numerous patches of high-grade ore. Associated rocks include Late Permian gabbro. Local rocks include undivided pre-Cenozoic metavolcanic rocks, unit 2 (undivided).
Workings include underground openings comprised of 2 adits on the Rising Sun with 500 feet of drifts. An adit and several cuts exist on the Cedar vein.
Production data are found in: McCulloch, W.C., Oesterling, W.A., Spurck, W.H., & Tischler, M.S. (1964); Ferguson, Henry G. & R.W. Gannett (1932).
All reported production was from the Rising Sun vein.
