Placer & lode Au occurrences/mines and a Ni occurrence located in secs. 1 & 12, T18N, R9E, & in secs. 6 & 7, T18N, R10E, MDM, 3.6 km (2.2 miles) WSW of Mack House and about 7 km WSW of Alleghany, N of Kanaka Creek, near the Shannon Mine, on National Forest land. Discovered in 1855. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters. On S slope of Pliocene Ridge in Tahoe National Forest; 6 miles to Alleghany by graded dirt road. Gold was recovered from lode and placer deposits since the middle 1850s. Nickeliferous laterite was identified in 1975.

Mineralization is a deposit hosted in Late Cretaceous serpentinite and carbonate. The area is underlain by a prominent mass of serpentinite that is intrusive into older rocks of the Calaveras Group and Taylor formation. Locally, especially near the Red Ledge Mine, serpentinite was altered to silica-carbonate rock, which consists of mariposite, ankerite, secondary quartz veinlets, and magnetite. The mariposite is Ni-bearing. Lying upon serpentinite and silica-carbonate rock is mantle of deep, Ni-bearing, reddish-brown laterite and silica boxwork, up to 50 feet deep in places. Range and average depth are unknown. Local rocks include ultramafic rocks, chiefly Mesozoic, unit 2 (Western Sierra Nevada and Klamath Mountains).

Workings include unspecified surface openings.
