A former lode Au occurrence/mine located in secs. 25, 26 & 35, T20N, R10E, MDM, 1.7 km (1.1 miles) NE of Downieville, E of Pauley Creek and N of High Commission Peak, on National Forest land. Property is comprised of 100 acres. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters. USGS mineral record card lists secs. 25 & 26, T20N, R10E, while the map facing page 1__, report shows location in sec. 35 (cryptic note in MRDS file). Worked in Mexican days, before 1900. Worked for 30 years. Adjoins the Gold Bluff Mine.
Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in slate and quartzite. The ore body strikes N and dips 75E at a thickness of 6.1 meters. PArallel fissure veins of quartz & slate. The Mexican vein is 2 to 15 feet thick and the second, unnamed vein, is 2 to 5 feet thick. Both veins dip 70-80 E. The South Fork vein is a contact vein with no arsenopyrite at 20 feet wide, strikes N and dips E, with a quartzite footwall and a slate hanging wall. The Hartley vein runs across the formation, strikes NE and dips 60NW, 5 feet thick on FT (footwall ?) and hanging wall with 5 foot horse between. Local rocks include Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 4 (Western Sierra Nevada). (cryptic elements of data due to grammar and abbreviations in the USGS MRDS database file).
Workings include surface and underground openings with an overall depth of 38.1 meters and an overall length of 914.4 meters. There are 4 adits. The first adit is 350 feet on the vein. The second is 125 feet above and is in the same distance (both on the Mexican vein). There is surface work on the South Fork vein. On the Hartley vein, the third adit is 300 feet long with 50 feet on the vein. The fourth adit, above the third, is 70 feet long, with 150 feet on the vein, with stoping to the surface 45 feet above.
