A former Au-Te mine located in SW1/4 SEC 14, T13S, R4E, SBM, in Chariot Canyon, about 4½ miles SE of Julian and 1.9 miles S of Banner, at N33.04077 W116.53849 and N33.04247 W116.53819 (Chariot North).

1869 placer gold was first discovered by A.H. Coleman, a discharged Confederate soldier and farmer, in a small creek near Wynola. The creek is now called Coleman creek (N33.09782 W116.66196) and is nowadays of interest only to fishermen, but then it started a small gold rush. In February 1870 quartz with free gold was discovered at a place which is today the end of the Washington Street in Julian. More gold veins were then located in the Julian and Banner area. More than 100 claims were recorded. Most of the successful mining work ended by 1880. After 1900 there was little activity. 1930 till 1950 about 1500 ounces were produced. Incomplete records show that approx. 220’000 ounces were produced till 1959, most of it before 1900.

90 percent of the gold produced came from only eight mines, and 40 percent of that came from just one producer, the Stonewall Jackson, now in a state park located just outside the Julian district.

The gold occurs most commonly in intimate association with pyrrhotite, but the coarser gold is embedded in quartz.

The Golden Chariot Mine was discovered in February, 1871 and was originally patented by King, G. V. From 1871 to 1876 the mine was operated by Mark McDonald. It is the second most productive in the Julian area. It was operated with long interruptions till 2002. The last owner, Ken Donlan, acquired the property in 1981 and has reconditioned the No.1 Working Shaft, erected a new head frame and hoist house, and has constructed a modern mill, assay lab and office. The mine is now (2008) for sale, but political considerations hinder large scale mining in the Julian district.

The ore body of the Golden Chariot mine is located within the Chariot Canyon Fault. The gold comes from 4 quartz veins, but there may be as many as eight veins. The veins are up to 10 feet thick. The gangue minerals include pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, muscovite, tourmaline, and garnet. Tellurides have been reported from this mine.

The workings comprise 6 shafts (King, Begoyne, McDonald, Whitney and No 1 Working shaft) with levels and crosscuts at 100, 125,165, 185, 250, 300 and 350 feet with lengths up to 600 feet.
