A B(borate)-Na(halite)-Sr-Gypsum deposit/prospect/mine located in the NW¼NE¼SE¼ sec. 25, T8N, R5E, SBM, 5.3 km (3.3 miles) SE of Hector and 10.4 km (6.5 miles) WNW of Lavic, on land of mixed ownership (federal and private leases) (located claim - federal portion). Discovered in 1964 by Congdon & Carrey. Owned & operated by the Fort Cady Minerals Corp., California (1991). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.

Plans were to solution mine the deposit. This is the largest known colemanite deposit in the US. In the early 1980's, Duval developed, tested and patented a unique, in-situ solution mining and solar evaporation process for colemanite where it is converted into boric acid and calcium chloride while still underground.

In 1990 (May) Corona was in the process of transferring ownership of Fort Cady Minerals to Avalon Corporation, an New York Stock Exchange-listed oil and gas company. As of May, 1990, 35% of detailed construction engineering work was completed and mining and reclamation plans were about to be submitted for permitting. Previous owners include Moiuntain States Mineral Enterprises, Tucson, Arizona (purchased the property in 1986), and Duval Corp. (early 1980's). Project management was awarded to Kilbourne International. Construction of an 82,000 tons/year plant was scheduled for 1990.

Mineralization is hosted in lake sediments & Miocene evaporites. The ore body is 36 meters thick with a depth-to-top of 410 meters. The colemanite occurs as fine-grained crystals in beds, bands, and disseminations within the anhydrite-rich part of the evaporite section. The deposit averages 118 feet thick at an average depth of 1,350 feet. The deposit covers an area of 384 acres. Local rocks include Recent (Holocene) volcanic flow units, unit 4 (Mojave Desert) and/or Quaternary alluvium and marine deposits.

Plant on site is a leach process operation.

Reserve-Resource data are found in: Sprague, 1990; O'Driscoll, 1990; Industrial Minerals, 1989; and, Norman, 1991.

Reserves and resources: Type: In-situ (estimate year: 1989); Total resources: 133,700,000,000 metric tons of ore. B2O3 at 6.4 weight percent (1989).
