One of four small mines worked by the Lane family during the early to mid-19th century and famous for native bismuth. The other three mines are Lane’s Copper Mine (Fan Hill Road - also in Monroe) (http://www.mindat.org/loc-234050.html), Lanes' (Lead and Silver) Mine - also known for bismuth - (Elm Street - also in Monroe) http://www.mindat.org/loc-14012.html, and Lane’s Mine of Trumbull (http://www.mindat.org/loc-23342.html). They also worked the small East Village pegmatite (https://www.mindat.org/loc-213269.html) in Monroe.

Coffey (1974) states:

In October, 1849, Ephraim Lane leased from Arnold Hurd eight acres of land off Barn Hill Road across from the Gray-Hurd homestead (20 Barn Hill Rd.) for “the coal ores, fossils, minerals and rocks containing mineral substances…together with the right of digging, boring, blasting, mining and excavating."

This mine was reopened in the 1890’s and was again in operation in the 1920’s. It most often was called Booth-Hurd’s Bismuth Mine. Bismuth was found to occur there in a free state in quantities, as was barylium [sic].


It used to be in a wooded area but in the 1990s or so housing was built all around and the cut ended up in the backyard of a residence, with no remains of the dump, so this is now an extinct locality. The mineral actually found here in abundance is pyrrhotite. The host was a massive quartz lode.
