A former placer Au-PGE(Pt) occurrence/mine located in sec. 19, T16N, R8E, MDM, 0.9 km (0.5 mile) ENE of Rough and Ready (about 5 miles W of Grass Valley). First produced in 1848. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters. USGS MRDS file states that the deposit is assumed to be near the town of Rough and Ready. The location given is where the lower ditch crosses highway 20 about 0.5 mile ENE of town.
Mineralization is a Pliocene stream placer deposit (Mineral occurrence model information: Model code: 119; USGS model code: 39a; BC deposit profile: C01. C02; Deposit model name: Placer Au-PGE; Mark3 model number: 54), hosted in gravel. The ore body consists of stream sediment deposits. Controls for ore emplacement included stream hydraulics. Local rocks include Tertiary pyroclastic and volcanic mudflow deposits, unit 9 (Cascade Range) and/or Mesozoic volcanic rocks, unit 2 (Western Sierra Foothills and Western Klamath Mountains).
Workings included surface and underground openings comprised of drift mining operations (1850's) and minor prospecting since the 1930's.
Analytical data results: Heavy sand from hydraulic cleanup yielded $115.75 (period values) Au/ton (0.755 ounce/ton/26 ppm); $15.60 (period values) Pt/ton (0.520 ounce/ton/18 ppm). Concentration not known.
